CoreLogic: Rising Home Prices Rescue Underwater Borrowers
The number of underwater homeowners dropped below 10 million for the first time in more than three years during the first quarter due to increased home prices, analytics firm CoreLogic reported June 12 in its First Quarter Equity Report. Negative equity decreased more than $50 billion to $580 billion as of March, down from $631 billion in December.

Commercial, industrial and institutional building owners and managers in the U.S. surveyed by the Institute for Building Efficiency said that tax incentives or rebates would most influence decisions to implement energy-efficiency measures; 7 percent cited adoption of green appraisal standards as a main influence, according to findings released June 11.

Freddie Mac Improvements to Benefit Investors, Appraisers
Freddie Mac said it will increase transparency by standardizing processes and releasing more raw data to attract private investors to the mortgage securitization market, The Washington Post reported June 10. Freddie also will institute a new systematic method for home appraisals.

A paper released June 11 by a visiting professor at the New York Federal Reserve said that using eminent domain to seize underwater mortgages could significantly reduce the nation’s foreclosure rate — and may revive interest in a plan many communities rejected in 2012, National Mortgage News reported.

Bank of America has started to gain traction in home loans after its share of the mortgage market sank to 4 percent following its closure of a business unit that bought loans marketed by third-party firms, Bloomberg reported June 11. The lender boosted home-loan volume 57 percent since the beginning of the year through March.

Mortgage Rates Rise for Six Straight Weeks
Fixed mortgage rates increased for the sixth consecutive week, Freddie Mac reported June 13 in its weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 30-year fixed-rate climbed 0.07 percent since last week to 3.98 percent while the 15-year fixed-rate rose 0.07 percent to 3.10 percent.
